Innate WINTER wellness - week 5 nutrition plan
Hello and welcome to week 5!
Lentils - they're taking over the world! With more people turning to vegan diets and looking for meat alternatives, these seeds pack a punch. Lentils are tiny round legumes (a seed that grows in a pod) that come in a variety of sizes and colors, including black, brown, yellow, red, or green. They are relatively cheap and have been a staple in many cultures around the world including India.
Lentils have the following benefits
- They are rich in polyphenols which are chemicals that fight against harmful agents in the body such as radiation and cancer. They have been shown to help fight cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, diabetes, bacteria, fungus, viruses, cancers and inflammatory conditions.
- They are protein rich
- They are high in iron - one cup gives about 1/3 of your daily iron intake
- They are high in fiber - fiber is imperative for good digestive health
- They are a good source of minerals such as magnesium and folic acid
You will notice that many main meals in the meal plan include lentils of some sort. One of the many benefits of having expert nutrition advice is that your diet becomes a lot more diverse. When I began my journey with my naturopath/nutritionist, my diet changed dramatically. Even our kids are now eating lentils with most meals (they love the vegan chili from the meal plans).
A diet high in fiber is the way forward and small changes right now may have a profound impact on your overall health in years to come. Lentils are packed with fiber however because of this, you may find you have more gas........ Maybe start off with small amounts...
Enjoy week 5!
